Ancient Wisdom

Infertility is a complex condition. Patients come in with endometriosis, irregular periods, poor quality eggs, low sperm motility, etc. There are many reasons why men and women can have difficulty conceiving a child, and there is usually more than one problem involved. Western medicine tends to focus primarily on the reproductive organs and sex hormones of the infertile, using surgery and drugs to "correct" a dysfunction. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is holistic by nature, taking every aspect of a patient's life into consideration. When there is an internal imbalance, Chinese medicine examines the patient's diet and lifestyle very seriously. Any practitioner you see should be concerned with these issues, because they are basic to good health and well-being.

Traditional Chinese medicine ascribes the causative factors of infertility to constitutional weakness, stress, poor diet, invasion of pathogenic factors, or excessive sexual activity at an earlier stage of life. The concept of yin and yang plays a vital part in the dynamics of infertility. Every person, male and female, has both yin and yang aspects to their essential nature. Problems with yin and yang include: excess of either or both; deficiency of either or both; or imbalance between them. The energetic part of the body which is concerned with birth, aging and death is called a person's "essence." Chinese medicine treatment strategy is based on sorting the patient's symptoms into patterns, which are then differentiated as "excess" patterns, "deficiency" patterns, or "mixed" patterns. For example, either an excess or a deficiency of the yin and yang aspects of essence can lead to a condition where the body is not able to nourish itself through the food it consumes. Insufficiency of nourishment can lead to a state where the female egg cannot be fertilized, or the fertilized egg cannot be nourished.

Over time, Chinese medicine has developed powerful techniques for treating the different causes and pathologies of infertility. Treatment techniques include fundamental ones such as body acupuncture and auricular (ear) acupuncture; and more advanced techniques such as treatment according to the four stages of the menstrual cycle (menstruation phase, post-menstrual phase, inter-menstrual phase and pre-menstrual phase); the eight-extraordinary-meridian approach, and the optimum-timing acupuncture approach.
